Summary: Using research data stolen from her adoptive father, Jessica created her EGO Illyn as a vessel for her violent urges.  She is made of an octal coding based on Jessica's DNA, and uses a unique form of energy to power her body and mind.  This psi energy can manifest itself as projectiles or random phenomena depending on mood and surroundings.  She wields a dangerous pair of rotary claws and refuses to show her face.

Name Origin: Unknown

Suit Mechanics: Unknown

Composition:

Jessica's adoptive father George Adler is a humble network researcher with a rather shady past.  For whatever reason, he possesses valuable research data on octal-based electronic life, as well as the failed workings of an unstable cyber energy source.  He also possesses the equipment necessary to duplicate body and mind into a computer system.  As influential as these assets may be, George guards them with great secrecy, also claiming that his research was a dead end anyway.  Jessica, too ambitious and competent to recognize boundaries, managed to uncover and complete her father's research for her own gain.  The result was Illyn: an extremely powerful, extremely temperamental EGO who matches Jessica in body and mind.  Illyn's strange octal coding labels her a "level zero" EGO, meaning the System cannot identify or locate her, as much as they wish they could.  Given her composition, she receives the same intrinsic advantages that Saipias possesses, but her biological human form remains intact, and she cannot directly share thoughts with her EGOist.  When duplicating her mind into Illyn, Jessica refined the device to sufficiently separate the two minds.  While George's research is a significant base for Illyn's composition, Jess alone is responsible for perfecting and applying his concepts.  All steps included, Illyn took about 2 years for Jessica to complete.

Psi:

It is unclear whether Jessica's psychic intuition is the result of extremely acute observational skills or if it is truly supernatural as some people speculate.  For Illyn, however, there is no question as to whether her powers are unique.  Her abilities revolve around the mysterious energy that Jessica pilfered from her adoptive father's research.  To the naked eye, it appears as a swirling blue aura, and when fully concentrated, it takes on the appearance of a translucent blue crystal.  When absorbed by an organism, the power courses through the body and mind, enhancing them, and at the same time, corrupting them.  George's notes indicated that such abstract and volatile power is useless to anyone with an incompatible mind, and specified how it was unsuccessfully tested on a number of virtual test subjects, achieving no effect or resonance whatsoever.  When Jessica first found her father's prototype for the energy, it was colorless, not to mention weaker and less efficient.  After studying the energy, she was able to augment it, at which point it attained a bluish color.  She then tested the newly upgraded power, using her digitally transcribed self as her test subject.  The then-incomplete Illyn experienced an incredible resonance with the energy source, becoming capable of wielding the energy with almost immediate fluency.  Jessica named the energy "psi," for the liberty with which the energy allowed Illyn's mind to function.

The implementation of psi into Illyn's arsenal was no trouble at all, for the power bound instantly to her as though it was meant for her use alone.  In reality, it was her brilliant and unstable mind which made her fully capable of wielding psi effectively.  Modern religious fanatics of the time might call the psi an evil power, because its function is rooted in the darkest secrets of existence, facilitating thoughts so deep and abstract, that it lies on the brink of madness.  The very nature of psi, however, is not only the absolute focus of the mind within itself, but also the projection of said mind on reality.  As the name suggests, psi encompasses the broadest nature of psychic abilities.  Once acquired, the use of psi revolves around one principle: the absolute perception of mentality and physicality as the same existence.  Jessica's blind emotionality, impulsiveness, and unique perception of the world, all brought about by her undeniable madness, made her the ideal candidate to comprehend and synchronize with the psi.  It was only natural that the power's host be as unstable, effective, and mysterious as the power itself.  Only Jessica and Illyn can understand the true workings of psi.

Illyn's psi power has become her signature ability.  While its function is dependent on mental state, Illyn can never lose psi completely because she is infused with it.  It is as much a part of her as the bones in her body.  Jessica, knowing the power that psi can grant, decided that Illyn should become a permanent embodiment of such power, regardless of consequence.  In addition to her natural capacity, Illyn is equipped with 6 psi crystals embedded in different parts of her armor.  They amplify the psi's usual strength and ensure that it never stops flowing in the event of a disrupted mental state.  The luminescence of the crystals tend to indicate the strength of Illyn's psi at the time.

Consistent Psionic Abilities:

The distinctive attribute of psi is that it has no limits.  Psionic strength is dependent on factors such as focus and will.  Saipias has also speculated absolute moral justification as having an impact on the psi's effectiveness.  Psi is as limitless in range of abilities as it is in power, so exactly what psi does is just as temperamental as the degree to which it is done.  Due to Illyn's mastery of her own powers, certain abilities have become almost perfectly consistent.  Illyn has achieved a level of almost permanent psionic focus, so her body uses psi as its power source, rather than a standard powercore.  As a result, Illyn's body possesses consistently superior strength and agility.  Since she does not want beauty to define her reputation, her helmet covers most of her face, including her eyes.  The faceplate contains no perforations or digital displays for visual input -- she fights blind.  She uses the psi to sense her opponent and surroundings, which creates a mental image far keener than human sight.  She claims the mask helps her focus her thoughts, although some say she's hiding some facial disfigurement from the psi.  Another consistent power is the ability to fire bolts of psi energy from her hands.  The bolts themselves can vary somewhat in intensity and behavior depending on the situation, but in most instances, they are far more potent than ordinary energy projectiles.  If there's something that Illyn is terrible at using the psi for, it's shielding.  Psi is perfectly capable of forging adequate energy barriers, but hiding behind a shield is simply too "cowardly" for her nature.  She prefers dodging and parrying through her superior fighting skill, however when she is hit, she relies on one of her most important innate abilities: regeneration.  Illyn is, for all intents and purposes, human, but the psi courses through her body like blood.  When she receives a wound, psionic energy seeps out and repairs the damage.  The variation in this ability involves how serious a wound can be healed and how quickly the healing can be done.

Inconsistent Psionic Abilities:

In the event that Illyn achieves absolute focus of will, rarer or completely new abilities may manifest through psi.  The exact nature of such abilities depends on what is most effective in that situation, and to a lesser degree, subconscious whim.  When emotionally distressed, her attempts at advanced psionic techniques tend to simply fizzle out.  However, when she is truly in control, she chooses abilities that maximize pain and fear in her opponent.  In the past, she has been known to use psychokinesis, telepathy, mind control, teleportation, levitation, invisibility, and illusion with some ease.  She is also capable of unleashing blasts of psionic energy, which can take the form of any of the classical elements.  Although, regardless of whether the energy manifests as electricity, ice, wind, or her personal favorite, fire, it always retains its bluish color.

Then, there are the abilities which not only require great focus, but also cause great pain.  In desperate situations, given adequate focus, Illyn can "overload" the psionic energies within her body to deliver attacks which can only be described as "godly."  The simplest of which is using her energy blasts without a projectile.  She can make her victim burst into psionic flame, bypassing all shields and defenses, a la spontaneous combustion.  Illyn rarely has to resort to psi overload, so most of these advanced abilities remain unexplored.  Some say she could split the earth if she so tried.

Drawbacks of Psi:

Seemingly limitless power is never without consequence.  Psi is as torturous to its user as it is fearsome to the enemy.  It is a fiery, volatile power that torments all that it contacts.  Simply having the psi within her body causes Illyn great pain at all times, and as more powerful attacks are used, it only gets more painful.  Jessica claims that the pain Illyn endures while overloading her psi is enough to kill a man.  Illyn describes the nature of the pain as "a burning, stinging ache that poisons the entire body.  When it intensifies, you feel like you're being burned alive, but then you realize that your insides hurt too much for the pain to be real, so then you try to forget...You try, but you never can.  You just learn to live with it."  It corrupts the body in a more visible way as well.  Psi augments physical strength in an almost electrical fashion, so intense and impulsive muscle contraction occasionally plagues her movement.  For this reason, Illyn's fighting style is not what you would call graceful.  As skilled a fighter as she is, her movements are jerky and spastic, which is frustrating to her, but intimidating to opponents.  As a coping mechanism for her frustration and anguish, Illyn has developed the habit of gritting her teeth during battle.

The torment isn't limited to just physical pain either.  Illyn claims to have demonic visions at seemingly random times.  She says they are often quick flashes of horrific images, and agonizing memories that aren't even hers.  During psi usage, the imagery becomes more frequent and more vivid.  This could be the result of her powerful mind running wild, but it is possible that all psi users share a telepathic link, and that she is receiving some unforeseen feedback.  Whatever the cause, the power of the psi is slowly driving Illyn insane.  The torment that Illyn experiences from psi only shortens her temper, which in turn focuses her rage and makes her stronger.  The only question is whether this vicious cycle will cause her own power to devour her.

Bladereaver Claws:

While Illyn possesses exceptional energy attacks and hand-to-hand combat ability, her arsenal wouldn't be complete without a strong melee weapon.  Illyn's gauntlets are lined with three diamond shaped "spikes."  Using psi, these spikes dislodge and closely orbit the wrist.  From there, the barbs extend forward up to a half meter, curving slightly inward.  The result is a three-pronged claw that surrounds the hand.  A strange piece of technology, only Jessica truly understands its workings.  Since the claws are psi powered, the prongs remain immovable by external forces, despite being suspended in an orbit.  The main reason the claw prongs are detached is to achieve full range of motion.  The opening and closing of the claws are dependent on hand and wrist position.  No part of the hand can touch the inside of the claw, so a bent wrist and open hand would open the claw completely, and a straight wrist and clenched fist would close the claw.  Following the orbital path, the claw can also rotate at very high speeds, though they can remain stationary as needed.

The claws cannot fail to function like pure psi does, so they are a safe and powerful weapon.  They appear unwieldy, but they were specifically designed to best conventional melee weapons.  The prongs of the claw are as sharp as solid material can get, although she can enhance the points with psi energy in order to pierce more deeply.  The crushing power of the claw is notoriously inescapable.  Rumors say they can break the thickest armor.  Illyn can use the rotating power of the claw to deflect attacks, break weapons, or propel psionic energy.  Since Illyn possesses a merciless fighting style, a common technique of hers is to impale the opponent on the claw, then rotate the claw at full speed.  When her goal is to instill fear, she'll suspend a beaten enemy helplessly in the air with psionic levitation, and slowly crush her opponent's head.

Heel Spikes:

Many of Illyn's abilities center around using her hands as weapons, but her skill in martial arts allows her use of any part of the body as a weapon.  Possessing great strength, balance, and flexibility, Illyn claims she doesn't even need psi to defeat most of her opponents.  Just as the spikes on Illyn's wrists may initially appear harmless, Jessica implemented another concealed weapon into Illyn's boots.  Upon use, the foot is contorted into a high heel position, and a spike will protrude from the heel to complete the configuration.  This heel spike is made of the same material as Illyn's claws, and is therefore just as sharp.  They are not commonly used in combat, but they are handy for intimidation and giving her kicks some extra potency.

Attitude:

Illyn is very much like her creator Jessica, but through the psi she is even less stable.  Most notably, she shares Jessica's ambition.  She has but one purpose in her existence, and that is to become the most powerful being in the cyberworld.  She trains her body and mind whenever possible in hopes of becoming stronger and mastering the psi.  Often lost in thought and unaccustomed to social interaction, she tends to act rather distant and apathetic.  When provoked, however, her repressed rage surfaces and she becomes a violent killing machine.  Her armor and fighting style are intended to inspire fear in her enemies, which makes them easier prey.  Though it is difficult to start a conversation with her, she is just as dark and as stubborn as Jessica.  She despises opponents who are as stubborn as she is, particularly Saipias, who believes that the power of psi is only as pure as the heart of the person who uses it.  He claims that because Jessica is violent and hateful, psi punishes her with a force of the same nature.  Illyn fervently disagrees with this argument because she knows someone as emotionally devoid as Saipias could never comprehend psi.

Illyn's only tender side is for Jessica alone.  Jessica and Illyn have a certain calming effect on each other.  While individually chaotic, the two can maintain inner peace by keeping in contact with each other.  While Jessica despises humanity, she kept Illyn fully human because she can't deny who she is if she wishes to become stronger.  Much like the bond between Jan and Saipias, Jessica claims that the only one who can understand her is herself, which is why Illyn is so important to her.  Jessica feels a little guilty for giving her best friend the burdensome power of psi, but believes she is strong enough to handle it.  Illyn does not blame Jessica for causing her pain; she blames the world.  Illyn has eliminated countless opponents in cold blood, but she tends to spare female EGOs out of sympathy.  Naturally, she shares the same prejudices as her EGOist, and Jessica sometimes points out that she needed an EGO in order to satisfy her need for tangible vengeance.  Jessica keeps a low profile in real life, so George is not fully aware of Illyn's existence or his daughter's use of his research.  He does suspect such things, however, as he knows his sealed research has been accessed, and he knows that Jessica created an EGO for herself.  As a father, he would pursue his suspicions further, but he knows this would only shatter what little trust she has in him.  He is content to leave her to her own devices as long as she stays out of trouble in the real world.

Role:

Compounded with her EGOist's own bloodlust, Illyn's pursuit of power has brought her to establish a certain duty for herself.  She spends her time as a vigilante who intends to rid the cyberworld of authority.  She meticulously hunts down and deletes any and all EGOs that she believes have grown too big for their boots.  However, this greater good viewpoint is almost certainly a mask to hide her true intentions for hunting the strong, which is to challenge her own skill and eliminate potential rivals.  Illyn is convinced that this mission is something that she is compelled to follow.  She has been rather successful in her endeavors.  As far as she knows, she is the most powerful EGO in existence, as she has never failed to dispose of a threat; never backed down from a challenge.  ISIS has been a major subject of contempt for Illyn because of its authoritative rule, and she has killed hundreds of its agents in the name of justice.  She even claims that the psi itself intuitively hates ISIS as well.  ISIS itself is dedicating a great deal of resources to pursue the elusive EGO assassin; to make an example of her.  Illyn says she will someday destroy ISIS, but she has more independent threats to eliminate before she is strong enough to do so.  Her newest target is Saipias.

Pictured here.

The nature of Illyn's powers is rather different from the previous EGOs' abilities. While there are mechanical workings involved, most of her psionic powers are abstract. In this case, I tried to explain not so much the "how," but the "what." Saipience is a largely technological universe, so psi is pretty much the closest thing to magic you're gonna get.

Illyn's powers were initially very basic and very limited, because the story was supposed to focus on Saipias. Lately I've decided to take him out of the spotlight a bit and make him into more of an invulnerable mediator, rather than a fearsome warrior. Instead I gave Illyn a mystical set of abilities that would make her the powerful character. Of course, since these powers are far too godly to be considered "fair," I balanced them out with an equally taxing drawback, which would only make her character more complex. The powers themselves are also unreliable, so as a story element, they can suddenly not work at the most inopportune times. To make things even more interesting, she starts out as a villain.

Jessica Adler is already a dangerous character, but through the manifested nature of EGOs, Illyn gives us a look at how tortured Jessica's mind really is. In her grief, she trades her sanity for power, which parallels Jan's sacrifice of emotion for knowledge. Illyn is always tense in a confrontation, and Saipias is always lethargic. You can see how such a pair wouldn't get along very well, but deep down they're not so different. When Illyn and Saipias clash, you'll finally see what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object.

"emotionally comprimised" I dunno why, but I love the way you worded that.

Dang, Matt. This story is intense. XD Psi kinda reminds me of a twisted version of the Force...
